Risk and social inequality: exploring differential risk-return trade-offs to post-secondary education in Canada, 1986-2000
Authors: Charles Plante
Overview
Abstract (English)
In Choosing to Labour?, Wolfgang Lehmann finds that Canadian working-class students perceive post-secondary track futures mired in greater risk and uncertainty than their middle and upper-class counterparts. This paper uses techniques developed in financial economics and three cohorts of Statistics Canada’s National Graduates Survey to explore whether there might not be empirical precedent for these differing perceptions. Along the way, a basic theory of differential risk is offered.
