Summary

The Intergenerational Income Database (IID) is a database that links children and their parents using administrative tax data, allowing researchers and analysts to study intergenerational phenomena such as transmission of earnings from parents to children, income mobility, etc.
Since its introduction in the mid-1990s, the IID has been the main source of analytical research on intergenerational income mobility in Canada. The database has been updated several times, most recently in 2024 when a new cohorts (2006) was added to the IID sample. New cohorts are planned to be added in the future to maintain the five-year interval between the cohorts. The IID has detailed information about various income sources, including earnings, self-employment income, dividends and investment income as well as government transfers. Information about federal and provincial taxes paid by individuals is also available. A particular strength of the IID is that it allows for identifying children’s families and therefore analyzing income mobility at the family level.
