University quality and labour market outcomes of Canadian youth

Overview
Abstract (English)
This paper estimates the wage returns to the Canadian university reputation and quality by using the Maclean’s magazine Best Overall Reputation ranking and a quality ranking based on the quality index constructed by Principal Component Analysis of a set of university characteristics. The main data source is the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) for the years 1998-2008 and the outcome of interest is the hourly wage rate of Canadian youth. We find that returns to graduating from a high ranking university for women vary from 14 to 18 percent and up to 24 percent if graduating from a research-focused university but returns for men are not statistically significant.
