Overview
Abstract (English)
This study used nationally representative longitudinal data on the cohort of adults aged 18 to 50 years in 1994/95 from Canada’s National Population Health Survey and followed them over 16 years. Obesity was measured by BMI (body mass index). This study found that participation in physical activity is negatively associated with BMI among adults. At least 0.5 hours/day of walking decreasing BMI by 0.1-0.2 kg/m2, while work-related physical activity also reduced adult BMI in the range of 0.2-0.4 points. The authors concluded that the promotion of physical activity in daily lives is critical to reduce obesity risks.
