Intra-firm upward mobility and immigration

Overview
Abstract (English)
We estimate the predicted probabilities of promotion on the job for immigrants and their native peers in Canada using data linking employees to their employees. Using firm-fixed effects, we are able to identify the extent to which the differences in promotion probabilities result from immigrants sorting into “dead-end” jobs versus differences in the probability of promotion within any given employer. We find that while white immigrants are not less likely to be promoted than their native peers, visible minority immigrants are substantially less likely to be promoted than their native peers. With the exception of female visible minorities newly arrived in Canada, however, the differences in promotion probabilities arise from differences in promotion probabilities within employers rather than from sorting across employers.
