Abstract (English)

Although questions of mobility are critical to how we understand immigrant settlement experiences in relation to longer-term life-chances, analyzing complex mobility trajectories remains a challenge. Current research tends to focus on either singular events or summary outcome measures, failing to account for the multidimensional, cumulative and path-dependent aspects of immigrant labour market trajectories. Drawing on data from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada, this paper analyzes holistic patterns of immigrant labour market integration as they unfold month-bymonth in the initial four years after settlement. Sequence methods (optimal matching techniques and cluster analysis) are used to identify a set of typical pathways immigrants follow after their arrival in Canada. Regression models further demonstrate that the type of pathways immigrants follow shapes their wages four years after settlement.
