Overview
Abstract (English)
Income inequality is a key public policy concern. In the context where inequality is on the rise in nearly all OECD member countries, with high earner incomes increasing twice as fast as that of low earners, we critically examine the main tools available to measure income distribution in a society, including the Lorenz curve, the Gini coefficient and the Zinga Index, and use them to examine income distribution in Canada. We also discuss the merits and limits of various data sources.
