Résumé (anglais)
The policy implications of whether higher income leads to better child outcomes has motivated a wide body of child development research. The significance is clear: if higher income improves outcomes then governments can use cash transfers to help “level the playing field” to improve children’s opportunity and population outcomes. If not, then other, possibly more complicated, policy solutions need to be used. The challenge is to determine whether increasing incomes will result in improved child outcomes. In this presentation we review and synthesize the findings of Canadian research on this question. We review studies that have used data from Canadian longitudinal surveys including, but not limited to, the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) and place them in context of major/well-known studies from other international surveys.
