Disability and educational success: An analysis of PALS 2006
Authors: Roy Hanes, Saul Schwartz, and Nancy Werk
Using data from the PALS 2006 Child and Adult Surveys, we analyze the determinants of educational success for children and young adults with disabilities. For children aged 5-14, we operationalize educational success using the subjective opinions of parents as to the educational success of their children. For young people aged 15-29, we use educational attainment, along with a variable indicating whether or not the person discontinued their education because of their condition. The results are unsurprising in the sense that children and young adults with disabilities directly related to their ability to learn are less successful than others. There are, however, variation across the disability types measured in PALS. For example, young adults with hearing disabilities seems to have greater educational attainment than people with other disabilities. finally, we have an interesting preliminary (and as yet unconfirmed) finding that suggests that the educational attainment of young adults who do not have a learning or developmental disability have levels of educational attainment equal to people without disabilities.
