“Is there ever going to be a time when we stop and they catch up?” Just one of the questions raised by a Nova Scotian high school student in this thought-provoking 34-minute documentary on Technology Access and Use in High Schools: the Pitfalls and Promises.
Long interested in the long-term life course effects of early family and educational inequalities, and anxious to disseminate their recent research on computer use in schools, sociologists Victor Thiessen and Dianne Looker (Atlantic RDC) take their research on camera in this SSHRC-sponsored KT project.
Filmed in selected schools in Nova Scotia, Canada and the Western Cape, South Africa, the documentary is not only an ideal tool to stimulate discussion in the classroom, it is also an excellent example of the insights a qualitative research approach can bring to questions raised by quantitative research.
