Overview
Abstract (English)
As baby boomers age, the factors that shape their decisions to live alone, with partners, co-reside with children, or engage in alternate living arrangements have far-reaching implications for health care, housing markets, and the demand for long-term care facilities, among other things. Using the 2017–2018 Canadian Community Health Survey, this research aimed to analyze the influence of demographic factors, economic resources, health status, and cultural background on the living arrangements of the baby boomer population aged 55–75. To gain a more nuanced understanding of the influence of marital status on these outcomes, this study examined the extent to which these effects differ amongst married versus non-married older adults. The findings indicate that gender, age, and racial background play significant roles in determining older adults’ living arrangements regardless of marital status, wherein females, older adults, and non-Whites all have higher tendencies for various forms of co-residence. Self-rated health statuses, however, exerted no significant effects. In addition, the influences of gender, personal income, immigration status, and language proficiency varied between the non-married and married populations, with economic resources being particularly important for the non-married population.
