About this event
Some background on CRDCN – The Canadian Research Data Centres Network (CRDCN) was founded 25 years ago and collaborates with 45 universities across Canada. Each year, the CRDCN provides access to Statistics Canada’s valuable microdata on Canadian individuals, households, and businesses to more than 2,500 researchers. The work carried out in the research centers has resulted in more than 3,000 publications, including more than 700 policy briefs. The CRDCN has a long history of providing free training on the use of restricted-access data sets and contributes significantly to the development of research data management training and support. The Network also plays a leadership role in the Canadian research ecosystem, particularly with regard to sustainable research infrastructures and the need for a national data strategy.
Some background on QICSS – The Quebec Inter-university Centre for Social Statistics (QICSS) is a regional partner of the CRDCN and coordinates access to Statistics Canada microdata in Quebec. QICSS also supports emerging researchers through training programs and scholarships, and organizes numerous events to promote the visibility and impact of research results from projects conducted in its five Research Data Centres (RDCs).
Research-policy nexus session – Magali Girard (Executive Director, QICSS) and Johanne Provençal (Director of Research, Training, and Knowledge Mobilization, CRDCN) will lead a 60-minute session bringing together local researchers from the CRDCN and QICSS, as well as representatives from provincial ministries. The session will provide an overview of the mechanisms of the CRDCN and QICSS that promote collaboration between research and government around shared priorities. It will conclude with an open mic where participants will be invited to identify key issues that could be the subject of discussions facilitated by the CRDCN and QICSS between the research community and governments.
Training session – Grant Gibson (Assistant Director, Research and Evaluation, CRDCN) will lead a 90-minute training session on restricted data discoverability for restricted data research projects. Participants will learn how to use a set of tools to make their restricted data FAIR (e.g., Sensitive Data Toolkit, university repositories and discovery services, etc.). Learners will work first-hand with these tools and become comfortable both applying them themselves and in advocating for their use by restricted data providers for greater research transparency.
In-person and online participation – While we strongly encourage in-person participation in this event, we provide online access for those unable to attend in person.
