Rental Market Survey
1989 - 2023
Overview
Summary
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has been conducting the annual Rental Market Survey (RMS) since 1971. This survey of the privately initiated, purpose-built rental market is the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind in Canada with geographic coverage that includes all urban centres of 10,000 population or more (with the exception of Whitehorse, YT). The survey frame includes purpose-built rental structures with at least three rental units contained in row (townhouse) or apartment rental structures. Since inception, the RMS has collected a core set of data on vacant units, rents, and universe counts by bedroom type, and by age, size and type of structure. The survey continues to expand with additional questions recently added on turnover rates and rent arrears. A comprehensive list of available variables is included in the data dictionary that accompanies this dataset.
